turns out a mate bought an aftermarket plenum, and he's going to bring it around for me to look at, so i can use the dimensions to make mine.

oh and i found out, 4AGE pistons will suit my build. so i just gotta buy 6 forged 4AGE pistons and a set of 264/264 8.8mm lift tomei poncams and im set. woot, go me.. oh and a GT3071r external gate turbo. then get tim to make me an exhaust manifold and im set. oh yeah.....!!!

ok ok... ive had some time on my hands, and my results is this.

scrap the RB24 idea. the amount of machining etc that i need to do is just not worth it.

heres my reasons. read all the way to the end, it'll all make sunse.

Bore x Stroke

RB20DET
78mm x 69.7mm
1997.3cc

RB25DET
86mm x 71.7mm
2497.7cc

RB26DETT
86mm x 73.7mm
2567.4cc

ok. 4AGE run 81mm pistons. to run these pistons would mean my engine would only be 2277.5cc Therefor only really a 2.3 litre. Tomei release a set of forged pistons for the RB24 with correct deck height. these pistons are 82mm giving only a 2334.1cc of capacity.

So i hear everyone say, use the 4AGZE piston, as they are forged from the factory, and cost less than Tomei replacement forged pistons. I would only be sacrficing 56.6cc in displacement.

All well and good, until i think about the bore size. Each RB engine block (20,25,26) has the same deck height (centre or crank to top of piston on TDC). But the differnce between all blocks are actaully in the castings. if you make the Bore wall too thick, it wont cool the bores, ending in piston overheating. so my guess would be the casting on the RB20 block, is the same thickness as all the other blocks. This brings me to think, if i increase bore size from 78mm to 81mm, im taking 1.5mm off the bore wall, thinning these out, and in return, these could crack under high boost pressures.

Plus i would need to get the bottom of the bores machined to clear the RB26 crank counter weights.

Sleeving could be the answer, but how much money is the 2277.5cc worth, considering i could get similar power to this engine out of an RB25.

But dont worry folks, the brendo-meister aint buying no RB25 and bolting it in. After talking to dad about this (afterall, he is a mechanic), he suggested buying an RB25 block and complete RB25 head. The RB25 head is for the larger valves, and matches the RB25 block (no machining required to bolt it on obviously).

Now, the RB25 and the RB26 have the same Bore, so i can just buy myself some RB26 forged pistons. then i can bolt the RB26 crank and rods i already have into this motor, as i have been told the RB26 cranks fits into the RB25 block without machining.

This will give me and RB26DET in an RB25 block and head. this will end up being the cheapest option for me, as i want to rebuild the motor anyway, so even if i did just purchase an RB26 the cost of getting it rebuilt, would still be ontop the purchase of an RB26.

Thoughts?

Why don't you get an RB30E bottom end and then put the RB25DET head on it and be done with it...

I too believe that the RB26 crank does fit the RB25 block without machining and since you have the RB26 rods and pistons these wil slot straight in as well, I cannot see a problem. HOWEVER, I have heard that you may need to machine for the RB26 counterweights, but I may be getting confused here...

So essentially you end up with an RB26DET but with haydraulic lifters and a weaker block???

techniquely yes, but for my goals in the terms of hp, i dont need an RB26 block. these are dearer and harder to find. RB26 pistons will be easy for me to find also, as some people upgrade to forgies. maybe if i come across a set of cams for RB26, i might grab them too.

the RB30 is a good idea, but the bonnet has already been cut to fit the motor in. and an RB30 block has a 1" higher deck hieght. this would mean raising my bonnet even more.

i didnt end up going to that, but the day before trent spun it up at mercury, to sus out this cutting issue, and it made 258rwhp.

What are those gauges like? Price wise and are they considered accurate?
Half interested in a moderately priced 52mm boost gauge is all... hate Autometer shit.
Car looks good too btw. Pretty good mods imho. And I like stock 32 wheels for some reason, always wanted them for my 14.
