Trailer

Well I thought I would share the build of my new box trailer.

I rebuilt Kate's dads box trailer a while ago because his floor was rusting out. The trailer was over 25 years old. I put the springs and axle on a new chassis and used a short alloy tray from a D22 Navara Dual Cab. Well I am now completely overhauling this because we need a bigger trailer.

I have decided to go away from leaf springs and a solid axle as I want to drop the trailer a bit lower. To get an even lower floor height I am building tubs into the tray. We also wanted a bigger tray so I bought a Mazda BT50 Single Cab Ute tray. Overall size is 2450 x 1850.

First step I needed to do to ditch the leaf packs is decide how I was going to set up the suspension. I decided to go the same way the Kimberly Campers off road campers are setup and go Independant Suspension. The difference is Kimberly Campers use a torsion bar whereas I work for a company that build shocks so I am going a height adjustable coilover.

So today I striped the old trailer off the chassis, ground off the leaf spring points and welded in my Indepentant Suspension arms. I have also welded in the loops that the top over the coilover will bolt to and the sheeting for tub will bolt onto this as well.

Next step is bring the tray home and cut it out to fit on the chassis, build the tubs and weld them in.

In the below photos, the trailer is sitting on the bump stops as I have not welded the brackets onto the trailing arms for the lower coilover mount to bolt to.

We will be using it for camping and tip runs etc.

The coilovers are in!! I added the bracket mounts on the trailing arm this afternoon after work and bolted them in when I got home.

How did this project end up Brendan?

I'm thinking of doing some mods to mine. Its an old nathan 6x4 box with a cage.

Wanting to move the spare wheel to a vertical position up against the cage and weld a small toolbox to store ropes ratchets and the net in. The jockey wheel is also too close to the hitch that can get in the way when winding it.

The 4 stud wheels are piss ant.. how hard would it be to change to something a bit bigger in a 5 stud pattern?

I managed to truck 1.3tonne of clay to the tip the other day. Thought it weighed a bit but not that much. .. until i got to the weighbridge.

Yeah I have pretty much finished everything I wanted to do with it. I beefed up the control arms as the old ones flexed when carrying GVM. I put larger bearings too so if I add brakes later I can rego it as 1500kg.

To go five stud, you just need to change the hubs. You can buy either Early Holden, Late Holden or Ford which for both LM (750kg) or Ford bearing (1500kg) however your axle size is what you need to know to get the correct bearings.

Being a 6x4, it would most likely be LM.

All Trailer Spares on Toohey Rd Salisbury are the go to for anything trailer.

co; if you were changing the hubs i would try and put 4wd-stud-pattern hubs on it and fit the same size rims/tyres as you have on your paj.

No worries, and Dan has a point, however I don't think you can buy 6 stud with early Holden bearings, so if it is early Holden, you may have to change axle too.
