Tarmac Rally

Post by cGr » Thu 20 Aug, 2015 7:30 pm

My tarmac rallying of late has been a bit quiet. I had a good run from about 2011 through to 2014 with an older guy in an R35 GTR, and whilst the car was quick and the driver was decent for an almost 70 year old, we both knew that he would be retiring soon. In 2013 he parked the car, and figuratively also his mind, in the trees, and he called it quits last year.

In 2012 a friend and his wife decided to try for a baby, so she got out of the nav's seat, and the driver got a recommended nav off another mutual friend. It was a bit unfortunate for me as I knew my current driver was going to call it quits soon (but I didn't know when), and I didn't want to be the catalyst for his retirement. To cut a long story short, my friend parked his car in a similar manner, and he too has been sitting out the recent events while he liquidated his previous rally car investments and spent some time with his new son.

Fast forward to a few months back, and talk of cars returned between he and I. There were a few options on the table (all of which involved a return to me naving for him), but the car needed a decent amount of power, to be rwd (where the rules were headed) and to be fast and reliable out of the box. The short list was a 997 GT2 and Dodge Viper, with the (very expensive and now difficult to buy) elephant in the room being a 991 GT3. Between debates on cars, he let slip the front runner, and then a few weeks back he picked up this.

To say that the 991 GT3 got the nod was an understatement, and whilst I'm not privy to how the alignment of all the planets and moons happened, I'm fairly happy the he bought the 'right' car for the job. Early reports from him echo the sentiment of all the youtube reviews, its a f.....g weapon in all conditions, and that its a proper drivers car. Its going to be interesting to see just how quick this thing is in October at Targa High Country, especially when he reckons that its quicker in a straight line than the 997 GT2.

To top off the return to form, another option which I've been working in the background has also come off (it never rains but it pours). I'll be running the Poatina Hill Climb in Tasmania in December in a 997 Porsche GT3 Cup Car (modified suspension, sequential gearbox, some other trick race parts) with a young guy who is also running Touring Car Masters in a Torana (youngest driver to do so at 16), and from all reports is pretty handy behind the wheel.

Nah, Paul was the once off. Not the greatest pedaller to be honest, but still a fun ride and a beautiful car.

All I want is a straight bit of road and to see the 9000rpm limit from behind the drivers seat :D

His collection isn't bad, but my favourite collection has this car in it.

This is the car which holds the record for the highest speed at Le Mans.
