Windows 8 / Windows 2012 RC Out Today!

Post by DreamensioN » Fri 01 Jun, 2012 9:34 am

Get the Windows 2012 RC here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/eval ... 70538.aspx

Windows 8 RC here:
x64: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=251532
x86: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=251533

And here's a bunch of what's new with the RC: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/wind ... pressions/\

For those of you who aren't up to speed...
Windows 2012 is the new server product (replacing Windows 2008/2008 R2).

If you want to install this at home as a desktop OS - you want Windows 8 (not 2012).

Im thinking about it!
I just don't know if people like me. I know when they don't like me 'cause they'll say things like, 'Yeah, that's him, officer.'

I've been using the Consumer Preview on my laptop since it came up. I like it, especially the new task manager, explorer copy, and the way the task bar natively goes across multiple monitors now.

Even for what is pretty much an "alpha" release, it's been rock solid - running all my apps. I've had no problem with it at all, except the occasional website in IE10 - which I need to switch back to compatibility mode for.

I like it. The only thing I'm really missing though is a touch screen for the Metro interface. Later this year, I'm going to get myself one of those Samsung Slate PC's (either a Series 7, or the new Series 8 ) - then I can use Windows 8 the way it was intended.

Ok - I'm now running Windows 8 RC on my laptop, and have just finished reinstalling all my apps.

Lets see how this goes....

Can you burn the ISO to a disc and install it as an upgrade directly over the top of 7? If you give this a good report card, might do it on my Lenovo X301 :)

Ok so - I'm really digging Windows 8.

I can really see now, how the metro interface ties in with the Windows Phone interface. Like the whole slide sideways thing, and things like the "People" section. They are the same on Windows 8, as they are on the phone. And now everything is synched.

The reason I'm talking about this now and not before under the Consumer Preview is because before, I couldn't get any of my metro apps to work. And I never spent any time figuring out why. Turns out it was because a domain group policy was killing my apps. I've now removed myself from the domain, and my metro apps work. And I can now see how all this ties together.

If you haven't given it a look yet - check it out. Even if you build up a VM (you can use virtual box for free, or if you have a dedicated machine - download XenServer for free). Or for that matter, if you have a Windows 2008 server - you can install the Hyper-V role.

LOL.

It's good.

And Windows 8 comes with Hyper-V now - so no more need for cracked VMware Workstation copies etc.

^^that probably doesn't make a lot of sense either lol

installed it on a spare laptop from work.
seems nice, but SERIOUSLY needs a touch screen.

very different to other OS's though. with the very brief time I've spent so far, its got some really cool features. :)
