wifi greyed out on iPhone 4S

Post by iano » Wed 18 Sep, 2013 9:28 pm

I've been googling this issue and most replies have been saying it's likely a hardware fault... not sure if the phone is still in warranty, I very much doubt it tbh.

Wifi on my 4S has been playing up. Won't recognise my home wifi, and now it's greyed out all together. I've tried:

- resetting the network settings (wipes passwords, stored networks, any VPN stuff, etc)
- factory restore from iTunes backup

Aint working :mad

Anyone else had similar issues? If I get apple to repair, it won't be cheap, at least a few hundred bucks I'd say.

Apple will replace it for $180. My sister has just been through all this with the battery in her 4.

So, if it's a hardware problem, iOS7 isn't going to fix it, right?

cnut of a thing

More weight to swap platforms eventually. I thought this phone was pretty much bulletproof after the crap I went through with my old 4.

Wrong.

I had the same thing happen to my 3GS before I upgraded. It was 2 years old and had massive wifi problems.
Then the speaker went. Then the mic played up and people couldn't hear me.
Then I dropped it and shattered the screen.

Then I sold it on eBay, with full disclosure and pictures of all damage, for $75. Which I guess is about $20 more than a perfect condition Android phone of the same vintage would've fetched.

Pls, do not complain about a phone manufacturer that will replace a 2yr old phone for $180. It's not a c##t of a thing IMO, it's a great product that has probably outlived numerous other tech devices, and backed by great after sales service. :)

My 4s was doing the same a little while back. Turned the phone off then on, deleted the network from my phone. Make new connection to the network and away we went

$180 for a new iphone 4 battery?! you can get an oem one on ebay for like $10 and it's the first thing out once you take the back cover off. the only difficult thing is the amount of adhesive they stick it in with.
it's the complete opposite of the 3 where the last thing on a complete tear down was the battery.
$180 for a broken screen on a four is a bargain.

My phone had this fault and was swapped over. It was under warranty though

Apple stores charge $35 for a screen replacement now.

It isn't a 2yo phone. It's barely scraped over 12 months. Bought it August last year brand new and have taken quite good care of it. Not overly expensive by smartphone standards, $600 bucks or so. But for something that works perfectly fine apart from this little glitch, I'm a little pissed at being asked to shell out another $180 - new for old replacement or not.

My 4S is fuct but that's mostly because I've cracked it open to replace a button (which was worn out due to a cheap case I was using).

yeah I figured that. but really it's costing you $180+your existing phone minus a $10 repair.
not really the best deal imo.
$35 to replace a screen is unbelievably good value though.

Booyah...still within warranty! Could've sworn I've had this thing for longer but it looks identical to my old 4 so yeah.

Walk in, state fault - here you go Ian, here's a new phone.

No. questions. asked.

zomg apple rules for customer satisfaction. And that's why people keep buying them.

EDIT:

The fault is caused by the wifi chip overheating/frying itself. Must be fairly common as the guy wasted no time swapping it over.

You did wipe your phone before giving it to them right?

I have had two replacement phones now and each time back up and restore from iCloud and wipe the phone before giving it to them.
