Keen to see what you think in a week.

I am genuinely thinking of one as a replacement for my Helix convertible when it finally dies.

I don't use any heavyweight programs anymore apart from photoshop. So it makes sense to go smaller and lighter.

12" screen not worth the jump? (serious question)

I've seen a few people running SP3 and SP2's, and while there's things I love about them:
- Size + weight (which are HUGE drawcards for me)
- Screen
- Tap the stylus button to instantly start onenote
- USB charger in the power pack

There's a few too many downsides for me:
- Only 1 USB port (which is also used for Ethernet connectivity)
- 12" screen size is way too small (9 times out of 10 that I see them they are connected to a full size screen)
- No wireless WAN (and no, I'm not going to tether my phone all day)

2x usb, 13" screen and wwan would mean I would have one in a flash

I find it frustrating too that Microsoft are so bent on price and weight, though neither of these include a keyboard (which at $150 is fairly steep in itself). As a $1000 portable (if it included a keyboard) it would be class leading, but as an everyday laptop option it is just too compromised next to a MBA (which is a few hundred dollars cheaper, which is saying something that Apple kit has always been a premium price) or Lenovo X1 (which is probably my current pick of portable laptops) that is the perfect mix (for me) between size and functionality.

no, my screen is really quite good for what i need it for.

if its at home doing photo editing duties or work, its connected to my monitor via the dock.
if its at home doing foxtel go, its connected to the tv.
if its out and about or internet surfing on the couch/bed, then its perfect size.

of the things you've listed as a downside, the 1usb port is the only thing that i've gone "damn i wish there was another usb port", but then again, plug it in to the dock and bam, all the usbs plus ethernet that you want. :)

dont get me wrong though, i still love my apple macbook air, but the SP without the keyboard is perfect for most tasks i do on the couch. (technically, yes, an ipad/tablet could do my couch/bed duties just fine, but then i'd have to buy ANOTHER device)

With my kit, I also got the dock for the reasons Ash mentioned. The Surface Pro 3 dock adds an additional 5 USB ports. Add to that the USB port you can already use on the tablet itself and you have 3 x USB 3.0 and 2 x USB 2.0 ports. The docking station doesn't weight a lot and it fits into my bag no problem. The idea is I can use the docking station when I need a "workstation", or I can just undock and have a laptop/tablet to take into meetings etc.

Can you take a photo of the dock for me Noel?

I kinda don't see the point of add-on peripherals if the main item doesn't achieve what I want it to do. Kind of like a 3 wheeled motorbike...

On the back here, there is power input, display port output, 2 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, audio in/out, and also on the side of the docking station is another USB 3.0 port, and on the opposite side is a thing where you can lock it to a desk.

Does the base of the dock fold up to the back to make it a flat (albeit thick) rectangular shape?

It doesn't. It's all fixed in that shape, but all in all, it's only about 3-4" in depth, and about the two thirds the size of a standard keyboard. I bring the docking station with me because it means I can get the full desktop experience, but I still get the option of mobility when I need it.

Many people do this sort of setup, with multiple monitors, and wireless keyboard/mouse, with external hard drive etc when they are at their "workstations", and just grab the surface alone when they need to be mobile.

errrrrrrr, how has the ipad had those capabilities since 2010?
a couple of them maybe, but unless i missed some sort of genius app when i had my ipads, stuff in that video is pretty amazing.

anyway, that aside, how is any video showing the capability of a device (windows/android/linux/etc) an attack at apple?
"not apple's fault", well, who said it was?

It's actually better! With the SP1/2, the windows button was in the middle down the bottom - so if your holding it in landscape mode with the keyboard removed, you had to move your hand to press the button (unless you wanted to try to do the thumb swipe function to bring up the software windows charm). With the new SP3, you don't have to move your hand at all. You can just tap the button. It does work better.

Also - I think it might be a design thing, because the keyboard on the SP3 can either lie flat, or sit up at a slight angle. The angle makes it more comfy for typing, but the raised keyboard would also then interfere with the start button if it was in the middle down the bottom. That said... whenever the keyboard is attached, I always use the start button on the keyboard itself anyway.

I think HP might have mixed up their design drawings with something already on the market

But with a 1.33Gz Intel Atom Processor and only 64GB eMMC storage... i think they missed the point
