Post by DreamensioN » Thu 08 Oct, 2015 2:49 pm

Ok...someone had to do it...

Microsoft released info on their latest products as they *cough* copy Apple *cough*.

Surface Pro 4
Bigger screen than Pro 3. (12.3")
Better pen (1024 points of contact within the head of the pen) - feels like using an ink flowing pen. Demo of what that looks like (with natural movement here)
https://www.facebook.com/verge/videos/9 ... nref=story
30% "more powerful" (whatever that means) than MacBook Air
Fingerprint scanner
"Hello Windows" facial recognition unlock
Redesigned keyboard

Surface Book
13.5" screen
Microsoft's answer to the MacBook Pro
50% "more powerful" than MacBook Pro
16Gb RAM with up to 1Tb of SSD storage
Full laptop style keyboard
3000x2000 resolution (267dpi)
Detachable screen (like the other surfaces) but more "clipboard" style. Screen is not held on by magnets but by electrified "muscle wires".
12hrs battery life
Hello Windows unlock feature

Lumia 950 / 950XL
Uses Windows 10 Continnum
Your phone becomes your mobile desktop e when docked (can use it like a desktop PC)
Full browser, Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel, Word, OneNote etc capabilities
HDMI output
Comes in 6 core and 8 core versions respectively
SD card expansion, better camera etc etc
Universal Apps - use the same app on your Phone, as on your Laptop, as on your Tablet

Band 2
Redesigned for more comfort
Now partnered with multiple vendors across all operating system (iOS, Android and Windows Phone)
Does blood oxygen levels and altitude now
Some other stuff fitness people will like....

If you've got a spare 1hr 47min you can watch the full briefing here: http://www.microsoft.com/october2015eve ... live-event

The Hololens demo is pretty cool - that's one of the first demos in the video. All in all it is a good presentation and very "Apple-ey". That said they're all just copying each other now.

But worth watching the presentation even if you're only half interested in seeing what they've done. It's pretty cool.

I obviously havent used it, but the whole "Win 10 Continnum" thing sounds really interesting.
if it truly has the capabilities of what they say it does and isnt clunky, then that could really change things for those in a "corporate" environment.

It's very cool and would be handy - a few people could get away with just using their phone for productivity and not have to carry a tablet and/or laptop.

For those wanting to skip to the good bits, you can cut through the video to these parts...
Hololens Demo = 10:15
Band 2 stuff = 17:10
Windows 10 Continuum demo = 40:00
Surface Pro 4 = 54:00
Surface Book = 1:15:00

I really wish Microsoft would get Windows 10 sorted for these uber-resolutions...

Finger print scanner in the new keyboards will give the geeks a big reason to upgrade their old keyboards.

Come back to me when Hello Windows is built into a phone!

It is built into the new phones. :)

The big feature that distinguishes the phones from their many competitors is their biometric security. Microsoft has eschewed the fingerprint sensors that are becoming increasingly common in favor of infrared iris scanning. This feature, which is currently in beta, uses the same Windows Hello infrastructure as is used to enable facial recognition-based logins on the desktop version of Windows 10.

have used facial scanning on android. much prefer fingerprint unlock - it means your phone is unlocked by the time it comes into your field of view, and you don't have to aim the phone at your face for the unlock to work. microsoft might of figured out an elegant way of making iris recognition work, but given their recent track record, it seems unlikely microsoft has made something elegant.

I used a Surface 3 the other day as a trial as i was looking for something to use when watching TV.

I think they are too much like a laptop as MS still has not quite got touch where it needs to be IMHO
