I think the cars made today are probably more unsafe (in certain respects) than the earlier models. Ultra lightweight carbon fibre panels and a 300k an hour straight just sends them airborne. Might be talking a bit simplistically but surely if a car had a bit more metal/overall weight it wouldn't be swept up like a plastic bag in the wind.

Cars today are safer in every respect. If we were still thinking like they did in the good ol' days, then no one would wear a seatbelt because its safer to be thrown from a car in an accident than have the car dissipate the energy.

More momentum (mass x velocity) = more force to stop. Less mass = less energy to stop. The car losing all its body parts, wheels and whatever else is just the energy (kinetic) being removed from the accident.

This is what happens when more metal/overall weight (and more mass) is involved in an accident:
